Let’s hope not.
An article posted on Sunday in the Memphis Commerical Appeal mentioned the Grizzlies entertaining an offer from the Wizards that would land swingman Rudy Gay in his hometown DMV in exchange for guard Bradley Beal, who would then head to Memphis as the key piece in a larger package deal. [ source ]
For example, the Griz have entertained the Washington Wizards’ offer for Gay. The crux of that exchange would have the Griz receiving rookie shooting guard Bradley Beal in a larger package. The proposals for Randolph have been even weaker.
If I were the general manager of the Wizards, the 19-year-old rookie is untouchable, barring some is-this-really-happening-to-us offer. Simply put, Beal is coming along nicely and the team has entirely too much invested to make the mistake of shipping him in exchange for a swingman like Gay. From a basketball standpoint and from a dollars standpoint, this would be a bad move for the Wiz.
That being said, Ernie Grunfeld in fact runs the show in Washington and we’re all aware of the kind of moves he’s capable of — crippling, paralyzing, bonehead, ridiculous, etc.
This report, as many others have noted, looks like a fire-starter from the Grizzlies front office attempting to help increase the market value and/or attention for Gay, assuming he’s traded within the next two seasons.
Wizards Insider Chris Miller of Comcast Sportsnet Washington helped fans believe such hoopla when he took to Twitter on Monday morning.
“The Rudy Gay for Beal rumor I’m told doesn’t make sense,” Miller wrote. “Memphis wants cash, a draft pick and a small forward in return.” [ source ]
In that case, let’s hope so.
