Donte Moncrief (Ole Miss)

NCAA Football: Texas El Paso at Mississippi

Height: 6’2″
Weight: 226
40 Time:

Projected Draft Position: 2nd – 3rd

Arriving on campus in 2011 as the No. 17 wide receiver according to Rivals, Donte Moncrief played in all 12 games his freshman season and hasn’t missed one since. Over the last two seasons, Moncrief has hauled in 125 catches for 1,917 yards and 16 touchdowns in 26 games.

+ Big, solid frame
+ Coordinated, given length
+ Good height – can play taller than 6’2″ at times
+ Long strides, deceiving speed
+ Good strength for the position

Route Running

+ Can operate a full route tree
+ Willing to come across the middle
+ Effective deep and short – offering versatility as a route runner
+ Can line up all over the LOS and present a threat
+ Can shield DBs
– Lacks explosiveness off the line
– Needs more hand work in his routes
– Lacks the physicality you’d expect from a big receiver

+ Wide catch radius
+ Effectively catches the ball away from his body
+ Tracks the ball well, with ability to adjust
+ Strong ability to catch in traffic
+ Has the size to go along with hands in jump ball situations
– Inconsistent focus with ball in the air – a ‘wow’ catch followed by simple drop

Running/Return Ability

+ Deceiving elusiveness – can chop feet and juke after the catch
+ Good acceleration for a long receiver
+ Good strength – can break arm tackles and high attempts
+ Deceiving speed – not elite, but plenty there
– Lacks explosiveness
– Not a physical runner, especially given his size and strength
– Loses speed to change direction

+ Willing blocker, but needs tech help
+ Hasn’t missed a game in his three years at Ole Miss
+ Will be just 21 in August
+/- Suffered from poor QB play in the games I watched
– Becoming more physical would help better him at catch point
– Doesn’t anchor well as a blocker
– Despite size and ability to impose, doesn’t play with enough nasty/anger

Final Say

In a deep wide receiver class with lots of upside, Donte Moncrief fits right in. With a desirable frame and experience running a full route tree in the nation’s toughest conference, a 20-year-old Moncrief has plenty of potential.

Despite less noticeable athleticism and explosiveness when compared to other wideouts in this class, Moncrief has strong traits of his own; and adopting a sort of nastiness or physicality with his game could go a very long way.

If Moncrief drops to the late-third or fourth round, he’s going to make a team extremely happy. Meanwhile, draft guys will refer to him as a “Poor Man’s So and So”.
